I wake up this morning to the “scandal” regarding Father Alberto Cutie kissing and touching a woman “he cares for deeply” on a beach being splashed and debated all over Good Morning America. It got me to thinking. First, I thought about just how much I miss waking up to sunrise Earth. Second, why are people so shocked by this? In regards to the first thought I really need to get a better cable service plan. The second question I pondered for quite some time. Why can’t priests get married?
So, in typical PinkI fashion I did a little research and asked some questions. According to “my sources” it turns out priests were banned from getting married about 900 years ago. Personally, the fact that someone decided from one day to another to ban all pious men from having any sort of intimate relationship with a woman and that everybody at the time and since has followed suit is beyond me! To the best of my research the only reason I’ve been able to find that makes sense is that the church made the move so as to not have to worry about sharing a priests limited incomes with family upon his death. Makes sense from the church’s standpoint. After all, if he has no heirs then the church recoups what little wealth he had.
I was explaining this to someone when they hit me with the famous line we’ve all heard “when he takes the oath, he’s married to God.” Personally this has always been enough for me to accept and walk away. Partly because of lack of interest and partly out of fear that I’d incur “the wrath of God” for even questioning the notion! Lol. Now that I’m getting older I find myself taking much less at face value and cutting through much of the hypocrisy in these organizations. How is it that everyone wants to lynch this man for having a natural, sane relationship with a woman yet they all read a book in which many of their saints were all married! A priests has to be celibate yet a very married Moses spoke directly to God.
What’s funny is that all this comes on the heels of several years’ the Catholic Church is doing everything possible to bury and forget. When someone first told me if I had heard about the scandal with Father Cutie, the first thought that went through my head was “hear goes another scandal with a priest taking advantage of a kid. How many cases have there been in the last couple of years alone? How many of those priests have we ever seen before a judge? None. Until the day I see some accountability and moral responsibility from the church I refuse to hear any of their hypocritical consternations when it comes to, what until today, has been a distinguished and honorable good citizen and a very caring priest. Perhaps if they didn’t have to suppress their natural feelings for a lifetime they might actually leave the little boys alone and actually concentrate on making the world a better place.
